Beaulieu Canada announced to its employees that it will be suspending production at its spinning plant in Wickham (located in Centre-du-Québec).
The company's decision will be effective as of July 26, 2008 and will affect the plant's eight management staff, the 69 unionized employees currently working at the plant and the 110 unionized employees who have been on the recall list for two years or less.
Beaulieu Canada's Wickham plant produces yarn used mainly to manufacture carpets for the new housing construction market in Canada.
The company's decision was necessary due to overcapacity at its Wickham plant. Since 2005, orders for spun yarns had reduced significantly.
This reduction combined with a stronger Canadian dollar and having to sustain higher wages has led to uncompetitive conversion costs. The type of yarns made at the Wickham facility will now be sourced from a related plant in the U.S.
Beaulieu Canada is seeking a buyer for the Wickham building and the plant's equipment. In the meantime, the company will continue to perform full interior and exterior maintenance at the plant.

Visitors and exhibitors planning to attend the ITMA ASIA + CITME 2008 exhibition are being urged to apply for their visa without delay.
Most foreign nationals will need a visa to enter China for the show, which is being held in Shanghai from July 27 to 31.
Show officials are warning that the Olympic Games, in Beijing from August 8 to 24, is already causing a backlog of visa applications in Chinese embassies around the world – so it will take longer than usual to process and validate requests.
With 100,000 visitors expected at ITMA ASIA + CITME 2008 – including a large proportion of both exhibitors and visitors from outside China – the need for visa applications to be submitted urgently is strongly recommended by the organisers.
ITMA ASIA + CITME is jointly owned by the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers CEMATEX and a Chinese consortium made up of CCPIT (Sub-council of Textile Industry, China Council for the Promotion of International Trade), CTMA (China Textile Machinery Association), and CIEC (China International Exhibition Centre Group Corporation).

Texcare International closed its doors after setting a new record on 4 June 2008. Altogether, 15,500 trade visitors from 80 countries made their way to Frankfurt am Main to see the wide range of products and services being shown by the 257 exhibitors – an increase of 17 percent compared to the last event in 2004 (13,330 visitors). Over one in two of all visitors came from outside Germany, which boosted the level of internationality from 46 to 52 percent.
The top five foreign visitor nations were Italy, Belgium, France, The Netherlands and Great Britain. Particularly large increases in visitor numbers were registered from East European countries, such as Russia, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as from the USA.
"Texcare International has further expanded its undisputed position as the world's leading trade fair for modern textile care. More exhibitors, eleven percent more exhibition space and an increase of 17 percent in the number of visitors provide impressive evidence of the global significance of this event", said Detlef Braun, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt.
85 percent of exhibitors said they had achieved their objectives for the fair. This was to be seen in the full order books, the numerous new business contacts made and the fact that over two thirds of visitors were the owners or top managers of their companies.

GE Security Inc, a business of GE Enterprise Solutions announced its Homeland Protection business has introduced StreetLab Mobile, its next generation, point-and-shoot handheld unknown substance identification system. The Raman Spectroscopy-based device’s chemical substance identification capability is expected to be complemented soon by the addition of biological substance identification capability. The biological identification upgrade is expected to make StreetLab Mobile the first combined chem-bio detector.
StreetLab Mobile is a portable, user-friendly handheld device that will be able to reliably identify a broad range of chemical and biological substances in liquid, powder and solid forms when later completed with the bio component. Using Raman Spectroscopy for data capture and analysis, StreetLab Mobile consumes little or no substance sample and makes it easy for the operator to understand and share results. The handheld unit uses extended-range wireless technology to allow first responders to quickly deliver accurate results from the field to tactical commanders at remote command centers.
