‘Solutions for Diversity’ - Shima Seiki returns to Barcelona

Link

The 2011 edition of the International Exhibition of Textile Machinery once again presents an opportunity for Shima Seiki to demonstrate its leadership in flatbed knitting machine technology. With “Solutions for Diversity” as its exhibit theme, Shima Seiki returns this year to Barcelona with a lineup that emphasizes its diverse range of products while showcasing the familiar combination of uncompromising technology, quality and value that has traditionally set the Japanese machine builder apart from its competition.

With a lineup emphasizing innnovatioin and consisting mostly of first-time international exhibits, new models, gauges and prototypes, Shima Seiki’s exhibit should prove fully gratifying to those seeking to witness the leading edge of flat knitting technology, from customers looking for new business opportunities, to the press community in search of a scoop.

Among them are products first shown during Shanghaitex 2011 earlier this year in Shanghai, China, including the SSR112 computerized flat knitting machine with superior cost-performance ratio, the SCG122SN coarse gauge specialty machine equipped with Shima Seiki’s own SlideNeedle, and a quicker and more efficient version of the SIP fabric printing machine, as well as Shima Seiki’s latest all-in-one design system SDS-ONE APEX3. Several more new models for both WHOLEGARMENT knitting and shaped production are scheduled for first-time introduction at ITMA 2011. As a result, of the 13 machine models SHIMA SEIKI will be exhibiting, a substantial 11 models will be new exhibits.

ITMA Barcelona holds significance as a commemorative occasion for SHIMA SEIKI as well. Firstly, this will be the company’s 10th ITMA in which to participate. Founded in 1962, SHIMA SEIKI will also be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012. 2011 therefore marks its 50th year in business.

AMS-224EN Series to increase sewing-pattern storage capacity

JUKI is launching the "AMS-224EN Series" with a dramatically-increased sewing-pattern storage capacity on the main body of the sewing machine. This machine is a new model of the AMS-224E Series. The new model inherits the established productivity, energy conservation and seam quality of the predecessor model.

The computer-controlled machine automatically performs sewing of patterns stored in its memory. The new model has the largest sewing area among the computer-controlled cycle machine AMS Series. It comes in two different types; one provided with a sewing area of "450 mm (W) x 300 mm (L)" and the other provided with a sewing area of "600 mm (W) x 300 mm (L)". The machine is used for attaching handles to bags, for sewing shape tacking of sports shoes, air bags and for sewing two or more pieces of small articles, such as sewing purses, at the same time.

The machine is provided as standard with a large-sized color LCD operation panel. It supports 14 different languages as standard. Sewing data such as the sewing shape, needle thread tension, enlargement/reduction, sewing speed and the number of stitches can be entered through the panel and stored in memory.

As compared with the predecessor model, the number of pieces of sewing data (the number of stitches) to be stored in the main body of the new "AMS-224EN Series" has been significantly increased from 20,000 stitches to 500,000 stitches, and the number of sewing patterns has been increased from 200 patterns to 999 patterns. This promises easy storage and calling of data, thereby improving operability. In addition, not only CompactFlash cards, but also USB thumb drives and USB card readers are applicable as sewing pattern storage media.

Lathes .. for Furniture and Railings

Used Locatelli MK-CC-E 120 Lathe
Lathes are machines to produce “turnings” generally used in the furniture or stair railing industries. Lathes can be totally manual or can be fully automated with CNC controls. The more simple lathes simply rotate the work piece while a single gouging knife following a shaped jig is transported along the length of the component shaping it to match the jig shape. More productive lathes operate on a rotating turret where the rotating components are first roughed and then finished at subsequent stations. This allows higher production without vibration. There are also high production lathes where the knives are rotating and shape slowly rotating components which move past them. More sophisticated lathes produce multi sided spindles as well as symmetrical round shapes. There are also carving lathes that produce non-symmetrical shaped components like “Queen Anne” or other furniture legs and components, axe handles, etc... Some more productive lathes produce multiple components at the same time.

Rip, Rip Hooray for Rips Saws!

Used Cantek C12 MRL Rip Saw
Rip Saws are generally used for ripping solid lumber planks. They come in either single blade or multiple blade configurations. Some multiple blade machines have 1 or more movable blades to facilitate the cutting of variable widths. Some are controlled electronically. They are often used in a lumber defecting operation. Some single blade machines are called Straight Line Rip Saws, meaning that they are capable of cutting to tolerances acceptable for later lamination for solid wood furniture, etc... The more accurate machines have the timbers transported on a knurled feed chain to control the timber more precisely. Some, generally less precise, machines are roller fed. Rip saws are generally used in larger production furniture or moulding factories where wider planks are reduced in width for subsequent operations.

Panel Saws of a Vertical Kind

Used Holzher 1230 Vertical Panel Saw
Vertical Panel Saws, also known as Wall Saws, are primarily used in applications where space is at a premium. Panels are positioned almost vertically against an inclined frame that is generally positioned against a wall. The saw head traverses and rotates to allow execution of both rip and cross cuts with the same head. This makes the footprint required much smaller than for either a Sliding Table Panel Saw or a Beam Saw. They are generally purchased either as entry level machines by smaller shops, or for specific applications in larger shops. Vertical Panel Saws can be from basic machines with completely manual controls and adjustments to semi-automated machines with programmable controllers. Scoring is done either by means of leading scoring knives, or on more sophisticated machines, with an independent scoring blade. Electrics range from 120/1/60 to three phase.

For more information on used vertical panel saws or many other fine, pre-owned woodworking machines, please call 866-514-0890.

IMB set to focus increasingly on know-how transfer

IMB set to focus increasingly on know-how transferIMB – World of Fashion and Textile Processing – is going to open its doors on 8 May 2012. As in the previous 38 years, the “who’s who” of the industry will once again come together in Cologne to present the world’s most comprehensive range of machinery, systems, control and production technologies, including IT, for the entire textile supply chain. Preparations for this large-scale event are already running at full speed.

“We are now entering the key phase. Our discussions in recent weeks have shown us that the industry is currently looking for orientation. For this reason, this is a time where it is particularly crucial to demonstrate what IMB stands for. Specifically, for us this means that we will host a leading trade fair of proven quality with fresh ideas. My promise to our customers is that in May 2012 Cologne will be the international meeting place for the world of flexible material processing”, says Bettina Glamsch, IMB Product Manager.

Experience has shown that the international mix of exhibitors and visitors is extremely high in Cologne, as is the quality on display. Almost 80 percent of industry and trade visitors are decision-makers.

“The advantage of IMB is that the producers of textile-processing machines not only meet up with dealers, but also directly with the managing directors, technical directors, mechanics and purchasers of the producing companies from the textile processing industry – in short: with the actual decision-makers from the industry”, comments Bettina Glamsch, emphasising the importance of the event.

Furthermore, visitors are very satisfied with the event. 76 percent responded that they were “very satisfied/satisfied” with regard to achieving the objectives of their visit. These are ideal prerequisites for a high level of customer loyalty, as exists at IMB.

Next year, special focus will be on the subject of know how transfer. In addition to the high calibre supporting programme, the exhibitors will offer a comprehensive range of product-specific workshops and user training sessions. IMB gives exhibitors the option to use their stand or a dedicated “knowledge area” for this purpose.

TenCate investigates possible restart of Osiris Inkjet Systems

TenCate investigates possible restart of Osiris Inkjet SystemsTenCate is investigating the possible restart of Osiris Inkjet Systems B.V. (Hengelo, the Netherlands) following the petition for liquidation filed by this company on Wednesday, 11 May 2011. Over the past ten years Osiris developed the first inkjet printing solution (ISIS) for textiles for the fashion industry at industrial speed (up to 30 metres a minute).

In recent years TenCate, together with Xennia Technology (79% TenCate) and other industrial partners, has been involved in innovation projects, both European and those subsidized by the Province of Overijssel (the Netherlands) in the field of inkjet technology. One of the results is the outcome of the European Digitex project, which was presented in December 2010. TenCate and Xennia presented a demonstrator for continuous inkjet textile finishing.

Sustainable smart textiles
Textile finishing based on inkjet technology will on the one hand bring about significant innovation in the field of sustainability and on the other hand will result in the development of revolutionary products (smart textiles). This technology can be regarded as nano-surface coating of technical textiles.

TenCate Protective Fabrics intends to introduce inkjet technology as a form of finishing on a pilot basis this year. This will over time allow the production of new protective materials for medical applications, defence, emergency services, etc.

Osiris and Xennia / TenCate
Osiris and TenCate developed separately in the past, in view of the fact that applications for textiles for the fashion industry (Osiris) and for technical textiles (TenCate) have different requirements. The knowledge and expertise acquired by Osiris is, however, complementary to that of Xennia and TenCate, and may possibly make a positive contribution to the implementation of the inkjet strategy of TenCate.

Madeira adds Coats new Trusew Magnetic bobbins

Madeira adds Coats new Trusew Magnetic bobbinsIn keeping with the needs of the embroidery industry, Madeira USA has added Coats new Trusew Magnetic bobbins, to its list of bobbins currently available. New to the market, the Trusew Magnetic bobbin can be used anywhere that tension consistency is required or on materials where overspin is an issue. The Trusew Magnetic bobbin that is now available from Madeira incorporates the high yield yardage and consistent tension that Coats is known for, with the instantaneous braking action of a magnetic core.

Now, customers ordering from Madeira USA will find a new magnetic bobbin to choose from! The Trusew Magnetic is the result of Coats intensive testing and bringing to market a magnetic bobbin that that lies heavily on Coats worldwide reputation, with the added convenience of the magnetic pull that many embroiderers have come to favor. According to a Coats spokesperson, “Incorporating magnetism into Trusew technology achieves much greater consistency of tension from beginning to end than any other magnetic bobbin on the market today. ” Put simply, Coats has taken a good thing and made it better.

The Coats Trusew Magnetic bobbin is available from Madeira USA in Style L with 135 yards and are packaged 100 per box. The magnetic core on these sided bobbins allows for a truly consistent feed. According to Coats’ technicians, “In reality, current magnetic bobbins in the market create very high tensions towards the end of the bobbin due to the magnetic design at the core that holds the bobbin too tight once 75-80% of the bobbin has been consumed. ” In measuring the tension of the wound bobbin thread, in grams, Coats Magnetic Trusew measure 30 at the outer edge, the middle and around the inner core. Other magnetic brands on the market measure 30 grams at the outer edge, but then vary to 35 grams at the middle and 60 grams at the inner edge

Kornit to share best practices in digital printing at FESPA

Kornit to share best practices in digital printing at FESPAKornit Digital, the world leader of industrial and commercial digital printing for the garment decorating industry, announced that it will be sharing best practices for industrial and commercial digital printing at the upcoming FESPA Fabric event, being held in Hamburg, Germany, May 24th-26th. Kornit will be presenting as follows:

May 24th, 11.30am: "Can Digital Perform Mass Production"

May 25th, 11.30am: "High-performance Commercial DOG Solutions"

Kornit Digital is also proud to accept lead sponsorship at FESPA Fabric 2011.

FESPA has recognized the different and growing demands of garment decorators and textile printers and has decided to split the FESPA show into two parts: FESPA Digital and FESPA Fabric, each of which will address the issues and trends that are specific to this market.

Sarel Ashkenazi, Vice President Marketing and Business Development at Kornit Digital, said "Digital printing has been going on since the mid-20th century. However, while digital printing on paper and other synthetic materials has seen rapid development, digital printing on textiles has been slow to develop. By understanding the extreme demands made on the textile applications by ink compatibility characteristics, stretchable and flexible materials, and the Wash & Crock fastness standards, Kornit Digital enables real solutions for printing digitally on textiles."

The Kornit Digital presentations will discuss how Kornit Digital offers a complete chemistry solution, based on its unique "Wet-On-Wet" technology, which enables digital printing with the same ink set on any type of fiber, particularly on uncoated cotton, while meeting all of the strict textile institute standards.

Sustainable Textile Leaders Roundtable Dialogue @ ITMA

CEMATEX and its organiser, MP International, is launching a global platform at ITMA 2011 to share trends, exchange views and collaborate for the textile industry’s sustainable future. The Sustainable Textile Leaders Roundtable Dialogue will see participation from major textile machinery manufacturers, textile and apparel producers, and brands and retailers when they converge at ITMA 2011 this September.

Organised as part of ITMA’s 60th anniversary celebrations, the inaugural dialogue is scheduled to be held on the opening day, 22 September 2011, at the Fira de Barcelona Gran Via.

Ms Sylvia Phua, Chief Executive Officer of MP International said, “Besides focusing on innovation and creativity, industry players need to tackle pressing environmental issues to ensure the long term sustainability of their businesses and secure their place in the global economy. We are pleased to partner with Textile Exchange to launch this dialogue to help all textile leaders in their quest for sustainability.”

Consumers are increasingly demanding eco-friendly products and supporting businesses that adopt eco-friendly processes, hence textile makers need to explore cost efficient and environmentally friendly solutions to meet rapidly growing demand. Companies with strong environmental and social commitments who spoke at a recent Textile Exchange conference also noted they had increased sales - even during the recession - as consumers chose to support companies with such initiatives.

Ms LaRhea Pepper, Senior Director of Textile Exchange said, “Textile sustainability enables the entire value chain to find cost savings and production efficiencies and pass those savings on to customers, while reducing the impact of textile production on people and the environment. With this as the key motivation behind the inaugural dialogue, we will be working closely with the organiser of ITMA 2011 to ensure we make a positive difference in the global textile industry.”
