Study of Air Consumption on Air Jet Weaving Machine

As it is well known, power consumption due to compressed air is the main disadvantage of Air jet loom when compared to rapier and projectile looms. This is making air jet less preferable where energy cost is the problem, despite their high production speeds. Studies which have been taken to reduce them, included manufacturing of different parts i.e. researches have been taken place on the manufacturing levels. But, we decided to reduce the consumption of air which may be due to some wrong settings, ignorance, etc. without any investment which can give profits to the mill by reducing the consumption of air. A decrease of air consumption by 18% was accomplished in a weaving mill by just changing the process parameters consisting mainly the blowing time of nozzles. By improving work practices i.e. by implementing KAIZEN we could save the compressed air.

Introduction to AIRJET

For the weft insertion mechanisms of air jet looms, the profile reeds with sub-nozzle systems are the most advantageous in terms of improving high speed weaving and wider cloth width. Not only the airflow from the main nozzle and sub-nozzles but also the airflow in the weft passage is closely related to the flying state of the yarn at the time of weft insertion in this system. In order to manufacture high quality textiles with air jet looms, it is necessary to establish optimum weaving conditions. These conditions include the supply air pressure and air injection timing for the main nozzle and sub-nozzles according to the kind of well yarn. Energy saving is the most important of the technical subjects related to air jet looms today. Research about the improvement in performance of main nozzles and sub-nozzles, which plays an important role for weft insertion, has been performed by various researchers.

Although some effort has been made to improve the efficiency of compressed air usage, the effort has not been uniform. There is still a critical need to understand the energy loss or consumption in filtration, distribution and machine usage in the textile industry. Due to technical barriers, reducing energy consumption by compressed air systems has been viewed as a complicated task.

Intensive efforts have been made by researchers and air-jet loom makers to overcome this problem and achieve a dramatic reduction in air consumption without any decrease in loom performance and fabric quality, but due to faulty mill practices and ignored settings, air consumed by looms is on higher side. So, our project aims to reduce the air consumption significantly, by optimizing some loom parameters. These parameters, includes mainly the relay nozzles because they consume 80% of the compressed air produced.

Objective: To study the consumption of air in air jet weaving machines
Specific Objective: Reduction in the consumption of air on existing machines

Excellent weaving loom machines

The weaving loom machine is a functional machine that has been present since ages. They mainly serve in the weaving fabrics, the rugs as well as a variety of other fabrics. When you think buying the loom for project or else necessity, there are a variety of aspects that you must consider prior to making the decision. This will help you in recognizing the most excellent machine from lot as well as also deriving the finest results.

When thinking of buying the weaving loom, you must consider that what you wish to weave, for example, fabric, rugs, or else tapestry. Second you as well need to think how big the piece do you mean to weave, how many space do you contain, as well as what are your ability as well as interests? If you are purchasing the weaving loom for first time you can look for the loom  textile machinery or else the rigid heddle loom. before mentioned looms are very easy to work on with as well as are also small as well as also provide you with the valuable insight also into many of the aspects of weaving. In the weaving loom, width point out how wide the fabric you can weave, though the length might be lots of yards on the floor looms in addition to it is often incomplete on the rigid heddle or else table looms. One of good weaving looms that you can purchase is 4-harness table loom. New version of this weaving loom is very cheaper as well as can also be moved very easily.

However, table loom is also hand-operated as well as therefore very much slower than the floor loom. As well because of the low weight as well as width, weaving possibilities are also very limited. At a distance from the few limitations, table loom is very popular as well as is appreciated by the beginners, the expression purposes, samples as well as workshops. An additional great purchase is floor loom however you must think it in case while you have the enough floor space. Compared to table loom, this part is very heavier as well as sturdier plus also works much faster. Floor weaving loom as well presents more potential as well as gives the better shed since of its superior depth. A few of the floor looms are also very light as well as can also be folded, while a few of the others are very heavier as well as engage more of the space. If you think on the weaving most of the rugs are heavy, floor loom must be the first choice.

Most form of weaving make the most of warp threads, from side to side which weft clothes are woven. For weaving a wall-hanging, there were 2 types of looms; the far above the ground warp and the near to the ground warp. Both looms long-drawn-out the warp threads sandwiched between two rollers.

Oerlikon expects modest recovery of business volumes

Oerlikon Group announces its annual results for 2009 as well as the successful conclusion of negotiations with its lenders and main shareholder Renova regarding a comprehensive financial restructuring of the company. The agreed restructuring package, which includes a CHF 1 000 million rights offering, will be implemented in the first half of 2010. The agreed measures are expected to strengthen the equity base of Oerlikon by up to CHF 1.3 billion and reduce net debt by CHF 1 050-1 300 million (approximately 77 percent) as further summarized below.

"Together with the ongoing operational restructuring, the financial restructuring will provide the basis for bringing Oerlikon's business segments back to profitability and support their sustainable long-term development," says Vladimir Kuznetsov, Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Hans Ziegler, CEO of Oerlikon Group, comments: "We are returning Oerlikon to a solid and sustainable operational and financial footing which will put us in a position to generate profitable growth again in the future".

"The financial restructuring will significantly strengthen our equity base and reduce Oerlikon's indebtedness to a sustainable level. In addition, it will remove short-term refinancing risk and repayment risk until maturity of the new loan facilities in June 2014. Together with the ongoing operational restructuring, the financial restructuring will lay the foundation for bringing Oerlikon's business back to profitability and support its sustainable long-term development", comments Jürg Fedier, CFO of Oerlikon Group.

The substantial indebtedness resulting from the debt-financed acquisition of Saurer in November 2006 combined with the subsequent unprecedented downturn of the global economy in 2008 and 2009 have had a significant detrimental effect on Oerlikon's financial position. The abrupt and substantial drop in demand for Oerlikon's products and services during the economic downturn has heavily impacted the Group's profitability and has made the current level of debt unsustainable.

The company has now reached agreement with its largest shareholder Renova and the lenders of the CHF 2.5 billion syndicated loan facilities regarding a comprehensive financial restructuring of Oerlikon. Cornerstones of the financial restructuring include:

• a capital decrease in the form of a nominal value reduction from CHF 20 to CHF 1 per share;
• a subsequent capital increase by means of a CHF 1,000 million rights offering of 268.7 million new shares to existing shareholders at an issue price of CHF 3.72 per share, with a commitment of Renova to exercise its subscription rights and a backstop commitment by the lenders to subscribe for any remaining new shares for which rights have not been exercised in the rights offering (other than by Renova) against conversion of debt;

Rieter Textile Systems: market revival in H2 of 2009

The impact of the economic and financial crisis was a dominant feature of the 2009 financial year for the Rieter Group. The unfavorable market conditions had an adverse influence on the trend of business at both divisions, and resulted in a substantial net loss. Despite a drastic slump in sales in the past two financial years totaling 1 973.8 million CHF – equivalent to some 50% – Rieter successfully defended its strong market position in the textile machinery and automotive supply businesses.

The difficult overall conditions subjected the group as a whole to a severe test. Rieter faced it successfully thanks to the strenuous efforts of management and personnel as well as thanks to the confidence of the shareholders. By focusing at an early stage on bolstering equity capital and managing liquidity, Rieter had a strong balance sheet with a sound equity ratio and positive net liquidity at year-end.

New orders received and sales by the group fell steeply in the year under review, but a slight recovery in the markets became apparent in the second half of the year. Rieter believes that activity in both sectors in which the group operates bottomed out before mid-2009. In the year under review Rieter made progress with the sustained improvement of its cost structure through restructuring and also took advantage of numerous opportunities for short-term cost economies. These measures in conjunction with improved capacity utilization due to higher volumes enabled the Rieter Group in the second semester to significantly reduce losses at operating and group level in the second half of 2009 compared to the first six months.

Investments in innovations and market development were reviewed against the backdrop of customers’ restraint and prioritized to enable the projects of greatest strategic importance to be implemented nevertheless. With a strong market position and attractive products Rieter is thus well placed to benefit from the next upswing.

Due to the unfavorable market environment, which affected the first half in particular, orders received by the Rieter Group in the 2009 financial year as a whole were 24% lower at 1 935.1 million CHF. Order intake in the second six months was 9% higher than in the same period of the previous year and 30% higher than in the first half of 2009. This positive trend was attributable to a significant increase in orders received by both divisions. Over the year as a whole group sales fell more steeply than orders received. They were 38% lower (35% lower in local currencies) at 1 956.3 million CHF. In the second half of 2009 this figure was 21% lower than in the same period of the previous year and 17% higher than in the first half of 2009.

SHIMA SEIKI knitting machines in action at RMIT Gallery

Three SHIMA SEIKI computerised knitting machines have turned RMIT Gallery into a temporary “mini lab”, as part of The Endless Garment exhibition.

The machines, on loan from Ramsay McDonald, will be working until 21 March. They will enable gallery visitors to watch technology in action, producing highly original and experimental fashion design.

Staged during the 2010 L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, The Endless Garment celebrates the fusion of the mass-produced and machine-made, together with the unique vision and the creative energies of the designer.

According to The Endless Garment co-curator Ricarda Bigolin, it is a rare privilege for people outside industry to be able to see the SHIMA SEIKI machines up close in action.

“The show is about machine knitting and in putting it together we felt it was essential to have the SHIMA SEIKI machines in action in order to show the capabilities of HOLEGARMENT technology, which is 3D seamless knitting technology,” Ms Bigolin said.

“It is extremely difficult for designers to have access to these machines, as they have a commercial application in industry. We are very grateful to Ramsay McDonald for not only loaning us the machines for the exhibition, but for supplying a technician to stay at the Gallery and answer questions while the machines produce experimental garments.”

The SHIMA SEIKI machines use digitally programmed data, which ensures consistency and production on demand with minimal wastage of materials.

According to Stephen Long, from Ramsay McDonald, there has been considerable interest from industry seeing the new SHIMA SEIKI machines in action at RMIT Gallery. “People will be able to see the Mach2-X model, which is the only true gauge WHOLEGARMENT knitting machine available on the worldwide manufacturing market,” Mr Long said.

Janome celebrates 150 Years of Sewing

150 years of evolution is a long time for any industry. In 1860, the Pony Express was established; written communication has certainly come a long way since then. At the same time, clipper ships transformed Trans-Atlantic travel, shortening the sometimes months-long journey to fourteen days. A fourteen-day ocean cruise is now considered a luxury vacation.

Prominent sewing machine manufacturer and distributor, Janome America is proud to commemorate 2010 as the 150th anniversary of its founding.

In 1860, William Barker and Andrew J. Clark, founders of Janome America, began producing sewing machines in Orange, MA. By 1882 they had named their company New Home, and were producing 500 sewing machines per day. In 1960 the Janome brand of Japan purchased New Home to establish its footing in the United States, consolidating manufacturing but not changing the name. Then, in 1995 the company was renamed Janome America, Inc., a reflection of the reputation established throughout the world for quality, reliability and ease-of-use.

It's surprising how far the sewing industry has come over the past 150 years. Those outside of sewing circles often regard the sewing machine as a historical artifact -- something their grandmothers used to create clothes during the Great Depression. Certainly not something stocked in modern-day retail stores. However, a visit to a local sewing machine dealer reveals a thriving, technologically-advanced product.

Janome America's 150th anniversary marks a high-point for achievements in the sewing and quilting industry. The company's founders wouldn't recognize the machine manufactured by their modern counterparts. Janome's top-of-the-line machine, the Memory Craft 11000 Special Edition, can produce embroidery as well as sew traditional stitches, offering 358 built-in stitches and 170 embroidery designs. It features a 640x480 color touchscreen, can link directly to a PC or will accept data from a USB drive, and can store 3MB of data in the sewing machine's own memory banks. It even utilizes technology built for high-precision industrial robots to ensure every stitch is accurate to the thousandth of an inch. And yes, it does thread itself!

Unique tangalia weaving art receives GI ta

Recently, the Tangaliya Hastkala Association, located in Wadhwan, Gujarat has recieved the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) assisted the association in procuring the GI registration. The products for which the GI registrations were sought are Shawls, Sarees and handkerchiefs.

Tangalia craft has a distinction of its own. It consists of knotting a contrast color thread, along the warp and pushing them together to create the effect of raised dots. This unique art is done using wool, cotton, silk, acrylic and viscose. The tangaliya products are made up of natural and synthetic material or a combination of both.

Since ages, weavers have designed motifs inspired by nature and their surroundings. Tangaliya motifs have a very geometric and graphic feel. The emphasis is on basic shapes like squares, rectangles, triangles and circles. The placement of ach dana is done precisely by calculating the distance between the warp and the weft yarns. Lots of contrasting colors are used in dana work. Commonly used colors are Blue, Green, red, pink, black, grey, maroon, purple and orange. White is used most prominently along with other colors.

The most basic motif of Tangaliya is the Ladwa - it refers to a ladoo, an Indian sweet. The other predominant motifs are peacock, felt of peacock, Ambo tree (Mango tree), Khajuri (Date palm tree), peacock on bush, peacock with diamond shape motif and peacock sitting on bungalows and airplanes. Tangaliya is produced in Surendranagar district of Gujarat and is spread over around 26 villages, practiced by a particular community called "Dangasia" (earlier a part of the Shepherd community).

Tangaliya Weavers Association established under the Societies Registration Act 1860 is responsible for the production and marketing of Tangaliya. Tangaliya (also spelled as Tangalia) is a very unique craft and has its origin and history in the roots of early settlement of life in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat, unfortunately, this craft either remained unnoticed or beyond the reach of the craft historians. Moreover, the craft was basically produced for the use of the community, which also created self-sufficiency and sustainability in supporting the entire community with clothing.

Tangalia craft which is distinctive from others consists of knotting a contrast color thread, along the warp and pushing them together to create the effect of raised dots. The effect is created without the use of any mechanical device and is manufactured using pit loom, which is installed in their homes, as the craft is basically a household activity. The pit looms do not have a warp beam; instead, the yarn hank is knotted to a pole from which the yarns are connected through the heald shafts to the cloth roll at the weavers end.

‘Subtle signs of recovery’ – German Garment and Leather Technology

The German Garment and Leather Technology has felt subtle signs of recovery over the last few weeks. Between January and August 2009, the real drop in incoming orders was -26 %. "This places our sector slightly above the VDMA average and most other mechanical engineering sectors", says Tilo Ullmer, the association's chairman on this year's member meeting of the VDMA German Garment and Leather Technology Association, held in Baden-Baden.

The VDMA brings together the following sectors of garment and leather technology: sewing and garment machinery, machines for shoe and leather production, laundry and textile cleaning equipment and machines for the processing and finishing of technical textiles. The production volume in year 2008 was 1.005 Million Euro.

China and Turkey as leading markets drop significantly
The German garment and leather technology was affected in 2008 by a global crisis amongst its customers. "For almost two years, the leading markets for the garment and footwear industry, such as China and Turkey, have seen their income drop by 30% or more. Structural problems in the key markets of our customers were then compounded by the global financial crisis", added Ullmer. The managing director of the association, Elgar Straub, added, "All our competitors face the same problems, but we believe that German suppliers will come out of the crisis stronger." He isn't just pinning his faith on Germany's good access to advanced technology but also its market leadership in the area of environmentally friendly and energy-efficient products, for which there is increasing demand. But German manufacturers are also benefiting from increasingly stringent environmental legislation, in China for example, which has impacted positively on German manufacturers of laundry and cleaning machines over the last few years.

Germany as the fourth world exporter
Germany defended fourth place in the rankings of the most important supplier countries for garment and leather technology in 2008, with an export volume of Euro 773 million. The industry recorded a drop compared to 2007 of 13.2 per cent (Euro 891 million). The largest export volume in 2008 was achieved with sewing and garment technology (Euro 394 million).
