Belgian textile machinery road show in India

The Belgian Textile Machinery Association SYMATEX organizes a road show in India.

From February 28 to March 4 2011, a delegation of the Belgian textile machinery industry will meet key decision makers of the Indian Textile Industry. The roadshow will visit Ludhiana, New Delhi, Mumbai, Coimbatore and Bangalore. Some key Belgian companies participating in this roadshow are Bekaert, Bonas, Picanol and Van De Wiele. The Belgian delegation will interact with the Indian textile industry to select effective technologies that meet Indian industrial needs.

The Belgian textile technology industry will present its newest developments in the areas of flat and pile weaving technology, jacquard technology, weft feeders, finishing machinery, weaving accessories, textile inspection and control systems, textile industry automation, carding technology, extrusion and filtration technology. Belgian textile technology developers will also show the latest technologies for the production of clothing fabrics, interior textiles (upholstery, carpet …) and technical textiles.

Answers to Indian industrial needs

The participating Belgian companies will interact with the Indian textile industry to select effective technologies that meet Indian industrial needs. Belgian technology providers will support the Indian textile industry in the achievement of its strategic goals to reduce raw material waste, energy and water consumption and to increase competitiveness. Some key Belgian companies participating in this roadshow are Bekaert, Bonas, Picanol and Van De Wiele.

French technology to boost Indian textile industry’s competitiveness

The French textile machinery manufacturers realise the importance of the Indian textile industry. Hence they invited the Indian textile producers to a series the Indo-French seminar “French Technology to Boost the Indian Textile Industry’s Competitiveness” which were held in Mumbai and Ludhiana on 20th and 23rd April 2010 respectively. Both the seminars were a huge success with a participation of more than 150 companies in Mumbai and close to 200 in Ludhiana.

The French machinery manufacturers recognise that the Indian textile industry has a double challenge:
- to cater to the fast growing domestic market for higher quality products
- to stand up to the competition in order to take advantage of globalization.
The objectives of the seminars were:
- to present how the French technology can enable the Indian textile producers to enhance
their position by providing sustainable competitive advantages in the following markets:
Recycling - Nonwovens - Technical textiles - Yarn preparation and yarn treatment - Modern weaving
- Knitting - Dyeing and Finishing - Air conditioning of textile plants.
- to regularly facilitate (the previous edition of these seminars took place two years ago) direct contacts between the Indian textile producers and the top management of the French machinery producers. Mrs Evelyne Cholet, the Secretary General of UCMTF, the French Textile Machinery Manufacturers’ Association, has always played a major role in the organisation of these seminars in India. She realises the importance of direct contact with the customers. According to her: “Organisation of such seminars in India is very important at present especially when the Indian Government realises the importance of new investments in textile machinery to stimulate this strategic sector. The technical textiles sector for which France has an expertise is another sector which has great potential in India”.

Hence the main aim of these seminars was to promote Indo-French partnerships in order to address the challenges of globalization.

Handloom training program for women concludes

A two-month training program on weaving, which commenced on November 10 at the training centre of Lamding Cherapur Handloom Cluster, Wangjing, Thoubal district, has concluded recently.

This training program was organized by DIC, Thoubal, under the integrated handloom development scheme to make women proficient in certain specialized weaving skills by using advanced designing machines, including, jacquard, dobby and jalla.

20 women, two from each ten self-help groups of Wangjing area, underwent this training program and gained knowledge of modern weaving and designing techniques to produce improved and more attractive handloom products as per current market trends.

Training to produce specially designed traditional phanek (wrap-around), shawls, bed sheets, mufflers, salwar-kameez and shirt pieces had been imparted thoroughly to the trainees.

Foremost inorganic nanofiber production line launches

ELMARCO s.r.o., a world player in the production of machines for the industrial scale production of nanofibers has successfully launched a new type of production line for the production of nanofibres. This so-called inorganic line is the first of its type in the world. The material which the line will manufacture had its world premiere in March 2009, when it was introduced by ELMARCO at it’s “Nano for the 3rd Millennium” conference.

The first contract, enabling the implementation in practice of this entirely new technology, has just been signed with the Czech company Kertak Nanotechnology, based in Prague. „This unique equipment will now be used in the Czech Republic, thus confirming its position as leader in the field of the production and use of nanofiber materials” stated Mr. Ladislav Mareš, ELMARCO executive.

The NS 18S1000i inorganic line, manufactured by ELMARCO, produces a variety of inorganic nanofiber materials. Inorganic nanofibers most often find applications in cosmetics, solar cells, lithium-ion batteries, catalytic converters as well as a range of other applications. Ladislav Mareš added that this new type of NanospiderTM line enables the production and utilization of new materials for the production of, for instance, photovoltaic cells, an alternative source of energy, and the enhanced quality of products for the cosmetic industry, for example skin protection creams.

Ladislav Jandácek, Kertak Nanotechnology executive, said „Our company is the first in the world to commence industrial production of inorganic nanofibers such as TiO2 – titanic dioxide or Li4Ti5O2 – lithium titanate. These fibres are used both in the cosmetic industry and in the transformation of solar heat into electrical energy in photovoltaic panels. Other areas in which they are used include the storage of electrical energy, the improvement of catalytic converters, chemical equipment, power solutions in hybrid vehicles and energy sources for state of the art electronic equipment.

“Inorganic nanofibers and their application in end products is a pre-requisite for so called ‘green products’ – products which are sparing on the environment and which use alternative energy sources. The acquisition of this new line strengthens our company on the market, and allows it to develop its own applications for nanofiber materials. We believe that in cooperation with scientific institutions and with ELMARCO we will continue to be a supplier of leading products in the field of nanofibers on an international scale” noted Ladislav Jandácek.

India less affected by downturn – VP, Dornier Machinery

2008-09 turned out as a tough year for Indian textile industry. Textile machinery companies faced either slowdown in demand or negative demand scenario due to the adversely affected global economy, which trapped the textile industry too. Sales of almost all companies registered slump and some experienced almost 40-50 percent reduction in demand which led to a 30 percent drop in machinery production in India.

Fibre2fashion took the opportunity to speak to Mr. Nitin Bavkar, Vice-President, Dornier Machinery India Pvt. Ltd. In turn he shared his views on recessionary scenario in Indian textile industry and possible recovery from this downturn. Dornier Machinery is a manufacturer of different types of textile machines like weaving machine, rapier weaving machine, air-jet weaving machine, film stretching machines, dryers and textile finishing machines.

According to Mr. Bavkar, India was comparatively less affected by downturn in demand than its counterparts in other countries and due to that Dornier India branch was comparatively less affected by recession, since they are not so much dependant on exports, although, during the tough period, exports from the Indian branch were a bit low, but domestic demand was not affected much.

Mr. Bavkar is quite optimistic about recovery in Indian market and said, “Things are certainly improving in domestic market and especially in weaving segment as the industry has started showing positive signs in investment from terry towel and denim manufactures and this may in turn bring encouraging scenario for weaving sector and weaving machinery manufacturers”.

While trying to elucidate his views on competitiveness of Indian made weaving machinery to its foreign equivalent and willingness of Indian market to invest in comparatively high priced machines Mr. Bavkar said, “Undoubtedly foreign weaving machine manufactures are better placed technologically.

Speed provided by foreign machines is still not offered by our manufacturers as the foreign companies invest a good amount in R&D, which is still not a trend in Indian manufacturing firms. Secondly Indian manufactures have limited manufacturing capacities and they don't manufacture in bulk”, he said.

With 100 German companies already registered for ITMA ASIA + CITME 2010, “Made in Germany“ is going to be very well represented at next year’s major event of the textile machinery industry, taking place from June 22nd to 26th in Shanghai.

The timing of ITMA ASIA + CITME 2010 fits with improving business conditions in Asia. After the all time low in January and February this year, China’s textile industry has recovered gradually. India’s textile sector seems to be coming out of the crisis as well. Experts from India expect things to settle down by the next two quarters.

Spinning charkha records extraordinary growth in sales

Many of Gandhi charkhas from the outlet of Gujarat Khadi Gram Udyog near historic Sabarmati Ashram are witnessing an outstanding growth in sales. Around 700 spinning wheels were sold in the year 2008, while this year the figure has already crossed 1,000.

Shri Lakshmi Cotsyn aims to double production

Shri Lakshmi Cotsyn, a textile major based at Kanpur intends to expand its existing verticals. The company, aims to double the production of its denim, terry-towel, bed-linen and cotton products in coming 12 months and has allocated Rs. 27 billion for this expansion.

This project expansion will assist the textile major to achieve a turnover of Rs. 14 billion, by June 2010, against Rs 9.37 million at present. The required funds will be raised through a combination of equity capital, internal accruals, FI funding and a public offering (FPO).

Under this expansion plan, the company will earmark Rs. 3.78 billion for terry-towels to raise its capacity from 3,000 tons to 15,000 tons per year. It will also establish a 12 MW co-generation agro-based power plant for 100 per cent captive consumption and will invest Rs. 0.75 billion for it.

In addition to this, it will invest Rs 1.6 billion in fabric manufacturing, Rs 1 billion in black-out curtains, while and Rs 3.5-4 billion in backward integration of its existing facilities. The company aims to have strategic alliances with domestic as well as foreign buyers to expand its dealer network.

Revenue of the company has been increasing at a CAGR of 46 percent since last four years. It aims to lead the market in all its operating verticals and to expand the business in most of the foreign countries, while domestic market is its initial target. For this, it will expand its retail outlets in India by June 2010.

Brahmaputra Cracker to invest Rs 8.96 bn in new projects

Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) will spend Rs. 896 crore on project activities during FY 2009-10. This was shared by Mr. B. C. Tripathi, Chairman BCPL and Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL (India) Ltd. while addressing the shareholders of the Company during its second Annual General Meeting here.Orders for critical equipment are being progressively placed from end August 2009 to January 2010.

Shri Tripathi also said that the financial closure for the project would be achieved by next month. The Job of Lead arranger for financial closure has already been awarded. GAIL will make an equity contribution to the extent of Rs. 188 crore. Along with the capital subsidy of around Rs. 316 crore; OIDB loan of Rs. 267 crore and current balance of around Rs. 124 crore, this would be sufficient for the requirements.

Over Dimension Consignment is a major issue in taking the project forward. Logistical arrangements for the project are difficult in the northeast region. This is particularly true of heavy engineering equipment as well as requirement of qualified and skilled manpower to implement the project. At present the manpower for the project is being met through drawing from the parent company GAIL (India) Ltd. Reviews of the project implementation are being taken in a regular manner at the highest level in the Company i.e. by Chairman BCPL and these constraints are being dealt with effectively to expedite the project. Shri B.C.Tripathi, Chairman, BCPL took stock of the current status of the project activities and advised the officials to keep a close monitoring and review of the critical project areas.

BCPL has so far made a total financial commitment of around Rs. 1720 crore for the project. Final Basic design and Engineering packages for all units have been received and accordingly material requisition and ordering of equipment are in progress. The Company has placed orders of over Rs.990 crore and tendering for other items to the tune of Rs.1400 crore is in process. Site delivery will progressively start from May 2010 and is likely to be completed by September, 2011. Similarly, orders for critical works are being placed progressively from November 2009 to May 2010.

The Company has achieved several significant milestones including completion of barbed wire fencing, topographical and geotechnical surveys, pipeline and hydrological route survey, infrastructure for construction power and construction of site office. Textiles Industry achieves 16% growth rate

The Investments in the textiles sector are expected to reach Rs. 1,50,600 crore by 2012 and this enhanced investment will generate 17.37 million new jobs in the textiles sector.

Addressing at a function in Kolkata after releasing the booklet tilted “Indian Textiles- The Sunrise Sector, highlighting the achievements of Textiles Sector during the four year tenure of the Government, The Minister for Textiles, Shri Shankersinh Vaghela said that the Indian textiles industry is in a stronger position than it was in the last six decades due to sagacious guidance provided by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Chairperson, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and Dr. Manmohan Singh, Prime Minister.

The industry which was growing at 3-4 percent during the last six decades has now accelerated to an annual growth rate of 16 percent in value terms and will reach the level of US $ 115 billion (exports US $ 55 billion; domestic market US $ 60 billion) by 2012.
